HATCH ART GALLERY JULY 8 - 30 2023
Artists Emilia Nawrocki and saylem celeste present an exhibition that explores two distinct perspectives on their experiences on family, religion, and bloodlines through their shared generational, matriarchal history of fibers and sewing.
The expression “the ties that bind” describes a common idea or belief that links people together. The artist’s shared experiences of growing up in families with background/skills in textiles and sewing, combined with the literal tying of knots within sewing, create a threaded interpersonal story of passing down culture and skills through maternal figures and their offspring. Binding our experiences together through the commonality of gendered family dynamics, being raised in religion, and our bloodlines. This exhibition will inspire discussions around family, gender roles, and the intersections of identity, friendship, and care through the craft of fibers that both artists hold near and dear to their hearts.
